This post is part of our WP Basics series, which hope to give all WP newcomers and overview of WordPress and what it can offer. This post will cover a powerful feature called Post Formats, which depending on your theme can offer an excellent way to taylor your single posts or articles around the content.
Does my theme support them?
Now I must start this by pointing out that not all themes support or offer post formats. Although its prevalent in our themes – you may not have the option to switch formats if your theme doesn’t support them. You can find this out easily by heading to Posts > Add New and should your theme support them, you will see this box to the right of the main WP editor.
If you dont see this box then im afraid your theme doesn’t support the awesome-ness of post formats.
What are post formats?
Basically, they are something that theme developers can use to allow you to style posts around the content you wish to deliver. As an example, selecting the gallery format will display a slider or something similar to showcase the images you want to wow your visitors with, or if you run a podcast, the Audio format could offer a neat display for your audio player shortcodes. The exact functionality depends on the individual theme, but overall most themes which support Post Formats will follow a similar vein.
A fanstastic example of Post Formats in use can be seen in the default WP theme, Twenty Fifteen – you can see in the demo the stark contrast of a standard post and a gallery post, which offers a great mosaic of images and really allow them to shine.
